Hanged at Gloucester
Hanged at Gloucester, published by The History Press in May 2011, is my first book. I became interested
in crime history while studying for a Master of Arts in history with The Open University. As the final part of my course, I wrote
a dissertation on "Female Offenders in Gloucestershire, 1750 to 1850". While carrying on my professional family history research business,
for my own amusement I began to research the prisoners who were hanged at Gloucester, starting with the women, then moving on to the
men. When I realised that The History Press was bringing out a series of county-based volumes on executed prisoners, I asked if I
might write the Gloucester editon.
Hanged at Gloucester provides a chronological account of all the prisoners who were
hanged in Gloucester between 1792 and 1939. 123 people (only 9 of them women) were hanged between these dates, most of them at
the County Prison, although a few were executed at the City Prison. The volume also includes an Appendix listing all the Gloucester
prisoners hanged between 1731 and 1790.
The book is available from local bookshops and outlets, and online from:
I am now writing my second book. Details will appear next year!
